An easy experiment to safely make a wire hot is to use a transformer and connect a bare wire between the two output terminals. All you have to do is place the meter lead before and after the part that you want to test and then activate the circuit (while cranking the engine, or with engine running in your case). Turn on the transformer and watch the wire.

I have seen several issues with this one ground cable in many years, make and model general motors products. In this situation we have a failure of the main ground cable that runs from the battery to the engine block and frame. Jordan probably hooked his battery ground to the car or truck frame not the engine block.

Heavy #2 gauge cable should be used to connect the battery negative terminal to the engine block or starter mounting bolt. Bad ground on a 2004 jeep liberty if you have bad grounds and since some computer sensors and solenoids use the engine ground to supply electrons as half the circuit, you will just have issues. In some cases, it is referred to as the negative battery cable.

In terms of actual wiring, you want to use at least 14 gauge wire for the body ground (see our ground kit for more info). A negative ground cable from the battery to the engine should not get hot if it is the correct size, large enough gauge (dia.) and not too long. Next, take a voltmeter and check the dc voltage at the battery posts and then the post connectors with the car running and the positive post off the.

You can buy a lot of arc welding sets that will weld steel which run off a car battery. What kind of cables do you have going to the starter from the battery and from the battery to the engine block ?. When the cable becomes loose, you will start experiencing all types of electrical problems.

If you are testing a ground cable you can go from the battery post to the engine.

Check your ground from the battery also, clean them all. Another reason that your battery wire is getting overheated is its resistance. Nevertheless, intermittent ground connections can cause some really crazy side effects.

The wire comes all the way from the negative battery terminal and is connected to the chassis. Try starting for just a couple seconds. The alternator puts out current on the negative side into the engine block where it has to go up the negative cable to the battery.

May be a loose connection in the cable ends or possibly the cable has deteriorated along the cable somewhere. Battery ground is bolted to the block, and an 8g wire is bolted from the cable connector to the frame. The charger is also connected directly to the motor though the wire is somewhat smaller than the battery cable, it is best to check it also.

A vehicle that is getting poor performance from its battery can look to a number of causes, but a common cause is a corroded battery cable that is high in resistance. If not enough juice is getting to the starter or there is not enough is getting back through the ground, then this could be the problem. Change it anyway and you will know right away if it was rotten.

If this is the case, secure the cable firmly just like how you did when establishing the connection for the first time. Test it by using both jumper cables on the negative terminal and to the engine for a ground. A bad or loose cable connection can cause it to get hot.

Check the two wires from the battery to the frame, the ground wire, and the starter, the hot wire. It will get warm and may get hot, depending on the thickness of the wire. I did clean all connections before reinstalling the new wires, so, can i rule that out?
